Other ways to say "however" - English linking words

These are some alternative ways to say "however". These words are used when contrasting two ideas. Check out the following example sentences to learn how to use some of these words in your conversations and writing.

Yet:  He makes a good salary, yet he never saves any money.

Nonetheless:  It was snowing outside; nonetheless, I went out for a morning walk.

But:  I wasn't so hungry, but I ate anyway.

Notwithstanding:  I didn't know him well, but was invited to his party notwithstanding.

On the other hand:  I enjoyed the film, but on the other hand, some parts were a bit boring.

Withal: The book wasn't so good, there was, withal, a good moral.

Note: "Withal" is fairly archaic and quite formal. It can be good to use in your writing, but will sound strange when spoken in a casual conversation.
